Reviving Your Garden After a Storm: Essential Tips from the Experts.

Edge & Cut – Garden Landscape & Garden Maintenance, Cambridge.

Cambridge, renowned for its picturesque gardens and stunning landscapes, is not immune to the wrath of nature. Storms, like the ones we’ve experienced recently, can wreak havoc on even the most well-maintained gardens, leaving behind a trail of debris, damaged plants, and broken fences.

However, fear not, fellow gardeners, with a little effort and some gardening know-how, you can restore your outdoors to its former glory. We’ll explore some essential tips for keeping your garden in good shape after a storm, focusing on garden maintenance, landscaping, and fence repair in Cambridge.

1. Assess the Damage

The first step in restoring your garden is to assess the extent of the damage post-storm. Take a walk around your garden and carefully inspect each area. Look for fallen branches, uprooted plants, and any structural damage to fences or garden features. Make note of areas that require immediate attention and prioritise tasks based on the severity of the damage. If you prefer the advice of a local landscaping company, reach out to us, we would be happy to assist.

2. Clear Debris

Once you’ve identified the areas that need attention, start by clearing away any debris left behind by the storm. This includes fallen branches, leaves, and other organic matter that may have accumulated. Use a rake or leaf blower to gather the debris into piles for easy removal. Remember to wear gloves and exercise caution when handling sharp or heavy objects.

For quick removal of garden waste and debris, Edge & Cut can address small garden clearances to commercial site projects, our services encompass the provision of robust clearance machinery, including diggers, excavators, rotators, and dumpers.

3. Prune and Trim

Next, assess the condition of your plants and trees. Prune away any damaged or broken branches, taking care to make clean cuts to promote healthy growth. Trim back overgrown foliage and remove any dead or diseased plants. This will not only improve the appearance of your garden but also encourage new growth.

4. Repair Fences

If your garden is surrounded by fences, check for any damage caused by the storm. Broken or leaning fences not only detract from the aesthetic appeal of your garden but also compromise its security and privacy.

Consider hiring a professional fence repair company to replace damaged fence panels, ensuring that your garden remains safe and enclosed.

5. Regular Maintenance

Finally, to keep your outdoors in top shape year-round, establish a regular garden maintenance routine. This includes watering plants, fertilising soil, and keeping weeds at bay. Regularly inspect fences and garden structures for signs of wear and tear, addressing any issues promptly to prevent further damage.

While storms may pose a temporary setback to your garden, with the right approach and a little elbow grease, you can restore it to its former beauty. By following these essential tips for garden maintenance, landscaping, and fence repair in Cambridge, you’ll be well-equipped to keep your outdoor space in great shape, come rain or shine.

So roll up your sleeves, grab your gardening tools, and let’s get to work revitalising your garden oasis!

Bad Weather Damaged Your Fence?

Edge & Cut- Garden Landscaping & Maintenance- for quality fence repairs and fence installations

If you live in Cambridgeshire or other parts of East England, you may have experienced the effects of the recent storms that have recently swept across the UK (January 2024). High winds and heavy rain have caused widespread damage to properties, requiring the need for emergency fence repairs.

If you find yourself among the unlucky ones dealing with a fence in need of repair, we can help!

The Impact of Wind and Rain on Fences

Severe weather, particularly strong winds and rain, can inflict structural damage on fences and garden buildings. The force of the wind may lead to holes or panels flying away completely, while persistent rain and a luck of sun, increases the risk of wood rot.

After intense storms, rain or wind, it’s important to do a quick inspection of your perimeter fencing and make a note of the issues that require attention before they get worse or cause injury,

Post-Weather Inspection: A Quick Checklist

1. Panel Assessment: Conduct a meticulous inspection of each panel for holes or cracks, prioritising efficient replacements over intricate repairs.

2. Base Inspection: Examine the base of posts for pooled water, indicative of softened ground and potential instability, addressing issues promptly through our emergency fence repair service.

3. Foundation Stability: Verify the stability of fence bases, especially after swaying caused by winds, which may displace soil and compromise integrity.

4. Hardware Check: Inspect screws and hinges for rust, damage, or misalignments, prioritising the use of high-quality materials in our fence repair services.

Fence Maintenance is important

Timely post-weather fence maintenance is critical for resilience. At Edge & Cut, we offer specialised and emergency fence repair services in Cambridge, ensuring your property remains safe and secure. For a reliable and efficient fencing service, choose Edge & Cut.

Don’t delay in getting your fence repaired

Delaying garden fence repair can put your safety at risk, lead to property damage, and result in disputes with neighbours. Invest in timely repairs to protect your property and avoid costly repairs down the line.

So, if you’re experiencing any issues with your garden fence, take action and repair it as soon as possible. Contact Edge & Cut today for prompt, reliable, and high-quality fence repair services in Cambridge.

The Benefits of Professional Hedge Trimming & Cutting in Cambridgeshire

Edge & Cut- Garden Landscaping & Maintenance- Quality Hedge Trimming Cambridge

Hedges are a great way to add beauty, privacy, and value to your property. They can also enhance the biodiversity and ecology of your garden, by providing shelter and food for birds, insects, and other wildlife. However, hedges also require regular care and maintenance, to keep them healthy, attractive, and under control. That’s why you need a professional garden maintenance or hedge trimming service, such as Edge & Cut, to take care of your hedges for you.

Here’s what to expect from hiring professional garden maintenance services in Cambridge

Get Expert Advice and Quality Results

A professional hedge-cutting service offers knowledge and experience to handle any type of hedge, from evergreen to deciduous, from small to large, and from formal to informal. They can also advise you on the best time and frequency to cut your hedges, depending on the species and the season to avoid damaging growth and shape.

A good hedge-trimming service can also ensure that your hedges are cut and trimmed to any design you desire, from straight and square to curved and round. They can also create decorative hedge designs, such as arches, spirals, and other shapes.

Enjoy Better Looking Hedges

Another benefit of regular hedge maintenance is that it can improve the health and strength of your hedge over time.

By cutting off dead or unnecessary branches, you’re allowing the hedges’ nutrients and energy to flow to the healthy parts of the plant, which will make it grow back denser and stronger. Trimming frequently can also prevent your hedges from getting too heavy on the top, which can cause them to fall over in strong winds.

Protect Your Hedges and the Environment

Hedge cutting can also benefit your hedges and your environment, by preventing diseases and pests, like box hedge caterpillars, and overgrowth. Hedge cutting can improve the air circulation and light penetration for your plants, which can boost their growth and health. Hedge cutting can also prevent your hedges from encroaching on your neighbours’ property, or blocking your views or access.

Hedge pruning can also reduce the fire hazard and noise pollution caused by your hedges. A professional garden maintenance service can also ensure that your hedge waste is disposed of properly in an eco-friendly way.

Want to Transform Your Garden Instantly?

If you want to transform your garden without waiting for years for your hedges to grow, you might want to consider instant box hedging or instant hedging troughs.

Whether you’re looking to add privacy, enhance aesthetics, or attract wildlife, there’s a wide range of options to choose from. In this guide, we’ll introduce you to a diverse selection of instant hedges, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits.

Here are some benefits of instant hedges:

✓ Privacy: Instant hedges are dense and tall, making them an excellent choice for creating privacy screens. They can help block out noise and provide a sense of seclusion in your outdoor space.

✓ Windbreaks: Instant hedges can also serve as effective windbreaks, providing shelter for other plants and helping to prevent soil erosion.

✓ Aesthetics: The formal appearance of hedges can add structure and visual interest to a garden or landscape.

✓ Shelter: Instant hedges also create a natural sanctuary for birds and other native species.

✓ Security: A prickly hedge is also a great intruder deterrent.

Common Types of Instant Hedges

Beech – Green (Fagus sylvatica):

Known for its magnificent foliage, the Beech hedge boasts fluttery leaves with a delicate golden-green colour that brightens gradually, culminating in a rich copper hue in autumn. This deciduous hedging plant offers year-round interest and is a popular choice for gardens seeking a touch of elegance.

Beech – Purple / Copper (Fagus Sylvatica Purpurea):

The Purple Beech is a stunning deciduous hedging plant that provides a beautiful range of rich colours throughout the year. Its vibrant foliage adds a unique flair to your garden and ensures that there’s always something eye-catching to admire.

Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia):

Cherry Laurel, also known as Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia,’ is a dense evergreen hedge with glossy, vibrant green leaves. This versatile plant is a staple in British gardens and offers a year-round burst of colour and privacy.

English Yew (Taxus Baccata):

Referred to as the King of Hedges, the Instant Yew Hedge Plant (Taxus Baccata) is a classic evergreen species known for its versatility, ease of maintenance, and year-round interest. It’s an excellent choice for creating topiary shapes and serving as a boundary hedge in gardens of all sizes.

Hawthorn (Crataegus Monogyna):

The Hawthorn hedge is a fast-growing, deciduous native plant that goes by various names like May Flower and Quickthorn. It’s a crucial component of native hedgerows and provides a wildlife sanctuary, making it an environmentally-friendly choice.

Hornbeam (Carpinus Betulus):

Hornbeam hedging, also known as European Hornbeam or Common Hornbeam, is a classic choice known for its lush green serrated leaves. It creates a dense screen, offering privacy, security, and an effective barrier against noise and wind.

Ilex Crenata (Japanese Holly):

Japanese Holly features dark green glossy leaves, delicate white flowers in spring, and small black berries (which are poisonous) in autumn. This evergreen shrub adds a touch of elegance to any garden.

Lonicera Nitida (Shrubby Honeysuckle):

A dense, bushy, fast-growing evergreen, Lonicera Nitida is a popular choice for medium-height evergreen hedges. It’s easy to trim and maintain, making it a convenient option for those seeking a tidy, low-maintenance solution.

Mixed Native:

These instant hedging troughs create an established hedge immediately upon planting and contribute to biodiversity by attracting a range of garden creatures. They offer a beautiful, eco-friendly solution for any garden.

Maintaining Your Garden Fencing in Cambridge: Post-storm Care

Edge & Cut – Garden Landscape & Maintenance Services and Garden Fencing, Cambridge.

The recent spell of strong winds and wet weather might not have brought your fence down, but it has likely taken a toll on its condition. Regular maintenance is crucial in ensuring the longevity of your fencing. In this guide, we’ll walk you through essential steps to assess and address any damage caused by adverse weather conditions.

The Impact of Weather on Your Garden Fencing

Although weather in Cambridge is rarely extreme it can be unpredictable at times, often coupled with strong winds with rain. This combination can wreak havoc on your garden fencing and outdoor structures. The force of the wind can batter panels, resulting in broken sections or even tearing them away from posts. Additionally, prolonged exposure to rain without adequate drying conditions can lead to rot, even in pressure-treated wood.

Pressure-treated wood offers better resistance to rot compared to dip-treated wood. However, it’s essential to note that neither is impervious to the effects of high winds.

Key Checks After Bad Weather:

1. Inspecting Panels for Damage

Begin by closely examining the panels for any signs of holes or cracks. This initial assessment will help you determine whether fence repairs or replacements are necessary. Generally, if several panels are damaged, replacement is the more practical option. However, if only a few panels require attention, targeted repairs may suffice.

2. Evaluating Post Bases

Pay attention to the base of the posts. If you notice pooled water around them, it could indicate softening ground, potentially leading to instability. Moreover, this could contribute to the rotting of timber posts with recurring water exposure. Clear any excess water and ensure that the bases remain intact and stable.

3. Addressing Soil Shifts

Strong winds have the potential to shift the soil around the bases, further compromising stability. Thoroughly inspect all bases for signs of instability resulting from either wind or pooling water. Packing the soil tightly around them will help restore stability and secure the posts in place.

4. Examining Screws and Hinges

Rust or damage on screws and hinges can significantly affect the integrity of your fence. Check for any misalignments that may have occurred due to dropped screws or hinges. These seemingly minor issues can escalate over time, leading to more significant problems. While stainless steel hardware is less prone to this issue, it’s always advisable to conduct a thorough check to ensure they are in optimal condition.

Conclusion

Regular post-storm maintenance of your garden fencing in Cambridge is a proactive approach to prolonging its lifespan. By promptly addressing any damage and reinforcing stability, you can avoid costly replacements in the long run. Remember, a well-maintained fence not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your property but also provides the necessary security and privacy you desire. Trust in these steps to keep your garden fencing in top-notch condition year-round.

We arranged with the client to pop round at a suitable time with her. Once we were there we had a chat about the garden, and type turfed we used is a mix of 50% Sauvignon Dwarf Ryegrass and 50% Fescues.
it was pretty much straight forward as all they wanted was garden to be turfed and path fill with purple slate.
We measured up to work out amount of turf needed and amount of root zone to put down.
Rootzone is a sandy/loam soil mix used to finish an area for turfing or seeding. … This soil has good surface drainage and low water holding capacity.
After all measurements and working out access , I went a work out a fair Quotation for her.
Quotation was accepted the next day and we arrange dates for delivery and job to be done. The job itself was a one day job, on the day the Clint was very nice with good amount of teas. We started off with little garden clearance then We level out garden ready to turf and started laying turf and sowing the joints together. Once all complete we used wheel barrow to bring slate in and lay that on the path.
Once it was all competed and clines was happy. We had chat about after care and watering and also offer garden maintenance service if she was interested.
